כשאמנים מאתגרים את עצמם להפוך את הבלתי נראה לגלוי, או את הבלתי נשמע לנשמע, הם נזרקים כמעט מיד לתחום האנרגיה שבקצה האמנות והמדע. זוהי הנקודה המתוקה אותה לא ניתן להגדיר או לסווג בעזרת הגבולות הקיימים של הדיסציפלינות. עולם האמנות, המבוסס ברובו על תרבות חזותית, מתקשה למקם יצירה מסוג זה ואין שוק אמנות שתומך במאמץ זה. במקביל הקהילה המדעית, הרגילה לעבוד בתחום זה באופן רדוקציוניסטי, מתקשה להבין. כשהטכנולוגיה והבינה המלאכותית מאיצות ומשנות את המחקר, ומעמידות אפילו את רעיון היצירתיות בספק, החומה בין אמנות למדע סוף סוף מתחילה להיסדק ועולה התקווה לדורות הבאים. נראה שהציבור נמשך ליצירות אמנות השוכנות "בין לבין", ונראה שיש צורך אוניברסלי בחיבור לתחום הרוחני מעבר למה שהדתות המוסכמות מציעות.
Once an artist takes on the challenge of making the invisible visible, or the inaudible audible, they are almost immediately thrown into the realm of energy at the edge of art and science. This is the sweet spot that cannot be defined or categorized with existing disciplinary boundaries. The established art world largely based on visual culture finds it difficult to place this kind of work and there is no market that supports this effort. The scientific community on the other hand, used to working in this realm in a reductionist way, finds it hard to comprehend. As technology and AI speeds up and changes research and puts into question even the idea of creativity, the wall between art and science is finally starting to crack and there is hope for the new generations. The public seems to be drawn to artwork residing “in between,” and there seems to be a universal need for a connection to the spiritual realm beyond what established religions offer.

About | Prof. Victoria Vesna
Victoria Vesna is an Artist and Professor at the UCLA Department of Design Media Arts and Director of the UCLA Art Sci center at the School of the Arts & Architecture and the California Nano-Systems Institute (CNSI). Although she was trained early on as a painter, her curious mind took her on an exploratory path that resulted in work that can be defined as experimental creative research and which resides between disciplines and technologies. With her installations she investigates how communication technologies affect collective behavior and perceptions of identity shift in relation to scientific innovation. Her work is focused on environmental issues and involves long-term collaborations with composers, nano-scientists, neuro-scientists, evolutionary biologists, and she brings this experience to students. At the Art Sci center, she organizes and hosts symposia and exhibitions and currently is collaborating with curator Anuradha Vikram on a large exhibition “Atmosphere of Sound: Sonic Arts in Times of Climate Disruption”, for the Getty museum’s Pacific Standard Time PST: Art X Science (2024).

ויקטוריה וסנה היא אמנית ופרופסור במחלקה לעיצוב מדיה של אוניברסיטת קליפורניה שבלוס אנג׳לס, UCLA. היא מנהלת המרכז UCLA Art Sci בבית הספר לאמנויות וארכיטקטורה ובמכון קליפורניה לננו-מערכות (CNSI). למרות שהוכשרה בשלב מוקדם כציירת, אופייה הסקרן לקח אותה לדרך חקרנית. את עבודותיה ניתן להגדיר כפרי של מחקר יצירתי ניסיוני ששוכן בין דיסציפלינות וטכנולוגיות. בעבודה על המיצגים שלה היא חוקרת כיצד טכנולוגיות תקשורת משפיעות על התנהגות קולקטיבית ותפיסות של שינוי זהות ביחס לחדשנות מדעית. עבודתה מתמקדת בסוגיות סביבתיות וכוללת שיתופי פעולה ארוכי טווח עם מלחינים, מדענים מתחום הננו, מדענים מתחום מדעי המוח וביולוגים אבולוציוניים. היא מנגישה חוויה זו גם לסטודנטים שלה. במרכז Art Sci, היא מארגנת ומארחת סימפוזיונים ותערוכות וכיום היא משתפת פעולה עם האוצרת אנודאדה ויקראם בתערוכה גדולה "Atmosphere of Sound: Sonic Arts in Times of Climate Disruption", עבור מוזיאון Getty Pacific Standard Time PST: Art X (2024).
