The Power of Difference

The Power of Difference: Interdisciplinary collaboration can happen at many different scales. It can be between two relatively similar scientific areas or can cross multiple boundaries. But the power relation between the two areas is rarely equal. Particularly in art-science projects there are multiple financial and cultural imbalances. To build effective collaboration you don’t just need clear communication but also a willingness to question power structures and challenge assumptions. I’ll be using examples from neuroscience, AI and dance.

About | Dr. Daniel Glaser
Dr. Daniel Glaser is director of science engagement at the Royal Institution. He was Founding Director of Science Gallery London and before that Head of Engaging Science at Wellcome Trust. He wrote a weekly column and presented a couple of podcast series for the Guardian. He was the first scientist to serve as a judge for the Man Booker Prize, as well as the first Scientist in Residence at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. His scientific research involved the use of fMRI to examine how experience, prejudice and expectation alter the way we see the world. He comes from an unusual academic background having studied maths and then English literature at Cambridge, doing a masters in cognitive science at Sussex, and graduate work in neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and postdoctoral work at UCL
